In 1994, the ICOM Czech Republic and the ICOM Slovakia followed the work of the ICOM Czechoslovakia, which in 1946 was at the birth of ICOM, and Czechoslovakia was one of the 14 founding countries. During its existence, the ICOM Czechoslovakia has been at the forefront of world museology, through imoprtant figures of modern museology such as Zbyněk Zbyslav Stránský, one of the most important museum theorists of the 20th century, and Jan Jelínek, who was president of ICOM from 1971 to 1977.

It was in the 1970s that ICOM underwent a major transformation into an organization open to all museum professionals, and the importance of international committees as tools for exchanging scientific work, experience and views was increased. In 1974, the definition of museums was acepted, which is still valid today with partial updates. Since 1977, the museum has celebrated International Museum Day every year on May 18.
